Our Children’s Ministry Mission

At St. John’s, we believe children and families of all types and backgrounds should feel welcome both in the worship service and in Sunday school. We offer a safe and engaging space for children of all ages to learn about God, the Bible and worship.

Sunday Morning Program

Our Sunday school program is offered weekly during the 10:30 am worship service. Children are welcome to stay upstairs in the service with their parents if they so choose and can keep busy with colouring or activity pages at the back of the church.

Otherwise, shortly after the first hymn, children are invited to sit on the altar steps for a quick children’s chat before heading downstairs to the Sunday school room. This is a cherished part of the worship service, as it is a moment of unity between the generations, and also serves to give a sneak preview into the lesson of the day. Children return back to their parents before the time for communion. All baptized children are welcome to receive communion bread and wine if they choose, or a blessing.

Our facility is fully accessible, and we wish to accommodate children of all abilities and needs. Please contact one of our volunteers to help us understand how best to serve your family.

Nursery

Parents with infants and toddlers are invited to bring their children to the nursery room where they can continue to listen to the worship service. The nursery is equipped with a sink, changing facilities, books, and toys. There is an adjoining door to the Sunday school room, and the younger ones often join in for songs and crafts.

Sunday School (multi-age)

We follow the Revised Common Lectionary, which ensures that the children are in sync with the church calendar and with the readings their parents hear in the worship service.

Children are encouraged to be active participants by sharing their thoughts, questions, and prayers. After the lesson of the week is read and discussed, children of all ages enjoy exploring the message further through song, drama, crafts or other activities.

The aim is for children to acquire Bible literacy in a meaningful way, one that illuminates the truth and power of God’s love for each and every one of them.

Family Events at other times

In addition to the Sunday school program, there are family events throughout the year. These include extracting honey from our bee hives, games nights, movie nights, outings to the zoo, Ash Wednesday trip to St James Cathedral, and the annual Christmas Pageant.

Outreach

Our children participate in outreach projects such as sending cards to shut-in parishioners, bake sales for children who suffer from chronic illness, and much more.
